About the artist

Charles Olsen. New Zealand, 1969

Son of an Anglican priest and an opera singer, he moved to England in 1981 and to Spain in 2003. He graduated in BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Middlesex University, London, in 1994. He travelled to Spain because of his interest in Spanish painters, Velasquez, Goya and El Greco, and to study flamenco guitar. He has painted portraits of flamenco guitar maestros El Entri and Jesús de Rosario in exchange for guitar classes. Painter and photographer. His work has been shown in Madrid, Barcelona, Oporto, Paris, Wellington, and London. His portrait of flamenco dancer Miryam Chachmany, "La Sundari", a winner in the first Saatchi Showdown competition, was displayed in the Saatchi Gallery, London.

As well as painting and photography he dedicates time to his music, poetry, graphic design and video. He has worked with the poet Lilián Pallares and pianist Odette Beris in the short animation "Llanto Congelado" (Frozen Cry, 2009) and has made music videos for artists such as Hope (London), Shangó Dely and Álvaro Llerena (Colombia). His video-creation for a performance of stories by Hans Christian Andersen with music by Jesús Torres and narrated and directed by Pedro María Sánchez, received great reviews at its premiere in Motríl (September, 2010). Olsen's first short film "The dance of the brushes" was awarded second prize in the I Flamenco Short Film Festival, Madrid, 2010 and was presented in the Flamenco Festival of Nîmes in 2011. His first book of poetry Sr. Citizen with a foreword by New Zealand poet, Pat White, has been published by Amargord Ediciones, Spain.  In October 2011 he presented the poetry recital with flamenco piano "Agita Flamenco" in the New Zealand pavilion of the Venice Biennale with Colombian poet, Lilián Pallares, and flamenco pianist, Pablo Rubén Maldonado.
